10 Lessons From Evan

Evan Carmichael, a leadership and entrepreneurial YouTuber, author, and coach, is constantly sharing lessons, lists, advice, and general inspiration. I follow Evan’s posts quite regularly and found 10 important lessons from his teachings recently that I’d like to share with you. They’re 10 simple points to keep you on track as well as focus and grow your business:

1)        Practice self-discipline

2)        Don’t be afraid to try

3)        Stick to your niche

4)        Just do it

5)        Know what you sell

6)        Be resourceful

7)        Grow your audience

8)        Learn to market

9)        Live your purpose

10)   Cultivate relationships

Most of these 10 points are intuitive, but when you really dig in you find so much gold and wisdom here. I love the tenth point, cultivate relationships, as that is one of the main focuses of our own teaching at AYM High. Relationships, not transactions, are where 21st century businesses that are hugely successful focus their time.

Of other great importance is the third point, stick to your niche. This is something we had to really tell ourselves over and over when creating AYM High, as with our five coaches we can really advise and coach any type of business, large or small, in many of the tenets that we have proven successful in our own experiences. And yes, we will entertain offers in different realms and eventually once our coaching team grows more can put some more effort into reaching out to other businesses, but to start we have really focused our niche on the industry that we have each been a part of for the vast majority of our careers: the mailbox, print, business center, and retail shipping industry. It’s our expertise. It’s our home. It’s our passion. It’s the area we have a ridiculous amount of experience in and knowledge about. So, it’s our niche. And we’re focusing on it to really do our best with it.

Finally, number nine: live your purpose. For AYM High and for me personally, our purpose is service and gratitude. They’re two simple things that, while not obvious to transactional-minded people, have been proven over and over in relationship-minded people to be hugely successful. As Adam Grant says, “Givers gain.” To serve is a huge privilege, and to do it with gratitude and grace is rare. But those who do find it coming back to them tenfold. We’ve proven this in our own lives and we want to do everything we can to share this simple truth with our clients. It takes faith, but it’s right…and it can pay huge dividends when done diligently, honestly, and wholeheartedly. You can’t expect the dividends, and if that’s your focus then it won’t work. But when done genuinely, it’s a proven karmic fact of life.
