FedEx Guarantees: Maybe Not What You Think They Are

For years, most of us who have been in this industry for many years (or many decades, as is the case members of our AYM High Consultants team), have operated under the unquestioning assumption that, if you need something to be there definitely, absolutely, and always guaranteed, then you ship it FedEx. FedEx always makes it right. They’ll get it there on time and, if for some reason they don’t, then they’ll give you your money back. Right? Isn’t that the deal? Isn’t that why we always push FedEx over other carriers for the most important things for clients who want the premium, best service their hard-earned dollars can buy?
Well, that’s indeed right. Sometimes. As always, there are exceptions.
We all know about natural disasters, weather, and out-of-FedEx’s control delays and how they void the money-back guarantee. We also all know about federal and major holidays when FedEx doesn’t operate, therefore extending the transit time.
We all know about the suspension of money-back guarantees during the peak times in December and early January. And we also all know about extended area deliveries and how, if you’re not shipping to a major city, likely the guaranteed delivery times will be extended.
But, did you know that FedEx 2Day and FedEx Express Saver are just simply not guaranteed? Like, ever? And did you know that some FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery services are actually guaranteed? We’ve found that many of our clients who operate FedEx Authorized ShipCenters® aren’t aware of this and are operating on wrong assumptions that “all FedEx Express shipments are guaranteed, but all FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery shipments are not.”
It's time for re-education.
To clarify things, we asked AI to search the ether and tell me specifically about FedEx guarantees. Here’s what it provided:
FedEx First, Priority, and Standard Overnight, as well as FedEx 2Day A.M., offer a money-back guarantee, meaning they guarantee delivery by a certain time, and if late, a refund of shipping costs is provided. Other services like FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery also have a money-back guarantee for on-time delivery, though the specific terms and conditions may vary.
Here's a breakdown of the guaranteed services:
FedEx First Overnight: Guarantees next-business-day delivery, usually before 8:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., or 9:30 a.m.
FedEx Priority Overnight: Guarantees next-business-day delivery, usually by 10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m.
FedEx Standard Overnight: Guarantees next-business-day delivery, usually by 3:00 p.m. or 4:30 p.m.
FedEx 2Day A.M.: Guarantees delivery within two business days by 10:30 a.m.
FedEx Express Saver: Delivers in three business days.
FedEx’s Money-Back Guarantee means that if your shipment is delivered outside of the guaranteed delivery time window, you are eligible for a refund or credit for the shipping charges. This guarantee does not apply to all services, and certain exceptions like natural disasters or weather delays may apply.
To ensure your shipment is guaranteed, it’s essential to:
1. Choose the correct service:
Select a service that offers a guaranteed delivery time that meets your needs.
2. Meet the cut-off times:
Ensure your package is dropped off by the latest cut-off time at your chosen location.
3. Confirm the guarantee:
Verify that the specific service you’ve chosen includes a money-back guarantee.
So, dear friends, please keep this information in mind when selling FedEx products. Don’t promise FedEx 2Day to be there (unless you’re selling FedEx 2Day A.M., which is guaranteed, but not regular FedEx 2Day). And never promise FedEx Express Saver to be there within three days. While these services have a great track record and way more often than not are delivered on time, the money-back guarantee does not apply to them.
